Day Trips

  • Leo Carillo Ranch in Carlsbad preserves the ranch of silver screen actor, Leo Carillo.  Explore this former working ranchero, with hand-crafted adobe buildings, antique windmills,  and dozens of brilliant peacocks.  There are nature trails throughout the property, including a 4-mile segment of Carlsbad’s citywide trail system.
  • Julian relishes the flavor of the old west. Explore this Frontier style town, pan for gold or gather fresh orchard produce. Julian is famous for their apple pies!
  • Warner Hot Springs and the foothills of Palomar Mountain offer winds perfect for ‘Sky Sailing’, or glider flight over and around Lake Hanshaw.    Explore local wineries, or plan to stay the night, and explore the night skies at the Palomar Observatory.
  • Arroyo Tapiado Mud Caves in the southern Anza Borrego Desert are some of the most extensive mud cave formations found anywhere in the world.  There are about 22 caves and 8 slot canyons in the area, with guided hikes available in cooler seasons through the Anza Borrego Foundation.   Maps and information are also available at their store location in Borrego Springs.

Overnight Adventures

  • San Diego Zoo | Year round special events at the San Diego Zoo include behind the scenes tours & overnight adventures. During summer months, the zoo stays open until 8 pm to host Nighttime Zoo.
  • San Diego Zoo Safari Park | Escondido | More outdoor adventures await at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (formerly the San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park.) Their Roar & Snore Sleepover is next to the lion enclosure for a roaring good time on the savanna!
  • USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum | San Diego | Take meals on the mess deck and spend the night in the berths that sailors used for 47 years on board the USS Midway.  Special tours and experiences are included in the overnight program, available to groups and families.
  • San Diego Maritime Museum | Downtown San Diego | Explore maritime life as it was in the 1870s on board the Star of India, docked along Harbor Drive at the Maritime Museum.
  • San Diego Ultimate RV Rental | Have a motorhome or RV delivered to most campgrounds in the county.  Unlike most rental companies, they’ll include most basic supplies, even buy your groceries!

Day Trips

  • Nature cruises explore the waters of San Diego Bay and the Pacific, seeking migrating gray whales and even touring the nearby Los Coronados Islands, off the coast of Mexico.  San Diego Harbor Excursions schedules regular trips during peak seasons, and even the Maritime Museum offers adventure cruises on their historic ships, lasting from just a few hours to overnight.
  • Temecula is a favorite local destination for winery tours.  Drive or catch a chauffeur driven winery tour at a fairly low cost.  If you have time to spare, you might also enjoy a hot air balloon rideFor information on a winery closer to San Diego visit the San Diego Wine Country Association.
  • Laguna Beach is known for its artistic tradition & galleries. Enjoy art festivals, indulge at peerless spas, or simply enjoy a fresh perspective on our sparkling Pacific waters.
  • San Juan Capistrano is the oldest city in Orange County, thanks to the legendary Mission established by Father Junipero Serra in 1776.  Don’t want to drive? The Amtrak train station arrives in the Los Rios Street Historic District (the center of town) and has several stations throughout San Diego County for your convenience!

Overnight Trips

  • Idyllwild | “One of the 1oo Best Small Art Towns in America” | Idyllwild  is our nearby alpine wonderland. Check out the upcoming arts events as there’s always a celebration or festival in the works in this quaint village.
  • Newport Beach is close at hand, via an I-5 drive, airport or train. Take the teeny car ferry across to the ‘island’ or hang out in the city, it’s the place to be!
  • Santa Barbara aka the “American Riviera”, lies 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles.  Why fight traffic?  Hop on the Amtrak at any of several San Diego County stations, and let them do the navigating. Be sure and go to Brophy Bros. for seafood right off the docks.
